Do you need a battery with solar panels?
Not always. A battery is worth it when it will shift enough electricity from cheap or free to expensive to pay for itself in a sensible time. That depends on your usage, your tariff and your solar generation — not on a blanket rule.
The key points
- A battery isn't automatically part of a solar system
- It helps most with high evening use and lots of unused daytime export
- A cheap overnight tariff can make a battery worthwhile even with modest solar
- Oversizing wastes money; sizing should follow your real demand
- You can usually add one later
The honest position
Telling a customer they don’t need a product is strong evidence of how a company works. So: a battery is genuinely valuable for some solar homes and marginal for others. Here’s how to tell which you are.
When a battery tends to pay
- you have solar and export a lot of unused generation every day
- most of your electricity use is in the evening, after the panels wind down
- you’re on a time-of-use tariff with a cheap overnight rate
- you’re adding an EV or heat pump that will lift demand
- you want essential circuits to keep running in a power cut
When it’s weaker
Low total consumption, a small array, little evening demand, or a poor export/import tariff spread — in those situations payback stretches out, and a battery may not be the best use of the money yet.
What we do
We model your consumption and, if you have solar, your generation, and show you what a battery would actually shift — in money, not just kilowatt-hours. Then we recommend a size, or recommend waiting.

Questions
Will a salesperson always recommend a battery?
Some do, because it raises the order value. We recommend one only when the numbers support it — and we'll tell you when they don't.
Can I add a battery to an existing solar system?
Usually yes, as a retrofit. Compatibility depends on your inverter.
How big should it be?
Matched to your evening demand and your surplus generation — big enough to be useful, not so big the top slice never cycles.
