Do you need a battery with solar panels?
Not always. A battery is worth it when it will shift enough electricity from cheap or free to expensive to pay for itself in a sensible time. That depends on your usage, your tariff and your solar generation — not on a blanket rule.

When a battery tends to pay
- you have solar and export a lot of unused generation every day
- most of your electricity use is in the evening, after the panels wind down
- you’re on a time-of-use tariff with a cheap overnight rate
- you’re adding an EV or heat pump that will lift demand
- you want essential circuits to keep running in a power cut
When it’s weaker
Low total consumption, a small array, little evening demand, or a poor export/import tariff spread — in those situations payback stretches out, and a battery may not be the best use of the money yet.
