Air-to-Water Heat Pumps · 4 min read

Can a heat pump replace my boiler?

In short

In most suitable homes, yes — an air-to-water heat pump can fully replace a gas, oil or LPG boiler for heating and hot water. The condition is a proper assessment and a system designed for the lower running temperature.

Can a heat pump replace my boiler?

The key points

  • It replaces the boiler entirely — you don't keep both
  • Off-gas homes on oil or LPG often see the clearest running-cost case
  • Insulation and radiator sizing decide how well it performs
  • The old boiler and, usually, the gas connection are removed

The direct answer

A heat pump is a complete boiler replacement, not an add-on. In a home that’s reasonably insulated — or can be — and with a heating system designed for the lower flow temperature, it covers all your heating and hot water through the year.

Where the case is strongest

Homes off the mains gas grid, currently on oil, LPG or old electric heating, often see both a running-cost improvement and a comfort improvement. Homes on mains gas can still benefit, but the running-cost comparison is closer and depends on tariffs.

What has to be true first

Enough insulation to keep heat in, radiators sized for a cooler system (some may need changing), space for a cylinder, and a spot for the outdoor unit. The assessment checks all of it and tells you the cost with the radiator changes already included.

Questions

Can I keep my boiler as a backup?

It's rarely necessary or worthwhile for a well-designed system. Some hybrid setups exist but add cost and complexity.

Is it cheaper to run than my boiler?

Off mains gas (oil, LPG, electric), usually yes. Versus mains gas it depends on tariffs and how well the home holds heat — the assessment models it.
